Pixel Shrine

Pixel Shrine, installation 2011-2012. A portable electronic Shinto/Buddhist shrine for meditation in the home or as a temporary setup.

This installation creates a meditative light pattern using any video source, filtered through an analog “pixelator” and a softening light diffuser.

A shrine is a gate, in the passage through which one thereby passes the threshold between the profane and the sacred. In repurposing used and obsolete hardware for the light source (in this case a decade-old laptop computer) it further emphasizes the (re-)use of the mundane for sacred purposes.
